Rama Shankar Pandey, MD & CEO Hella India Lighting Ltd.: mission is to ultimately, reduce road deaths

Ramashankar Pandey, one of the youngest professional CEOs, has been the Managing Director of Hella India Lighting Ltd. since 2010. He holds a global role at Hella Germany for Special OE Division, where he works directly with the US Market, in addition to his Managing Director job for India.

He is a graduate of NIT Calicut, ICFAI Hyderabad, and IIM Bangalore, and was awarded the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award in the Promising Category in 2016. He also finished the University of California, Berkeley’s flagship Global Advance Management Program in Silicon Valley. He is a member of the ACMA (Auto Component Manufacturer Association of India) Executive Committee and Co-Chair of the ACMA Consumer Affairs Committee. He is a member of the jury for the All India Management Association’s (AIMA) National Competition for Young Managers-2016. He is also a part of the SAFE-A (SIAM) Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers initiative’s working committee.

As president-CWC of the “Drive Smart, Drive Safe” organisation, he is highly dedicated about combating the rising rate of traffic deaths on Indian roads by directing numerous road safety awareness initiatives. He is better renowned as a social activist and a Road Safety Warrior than a professional CEO in this position.

With over 18 years of entrepreneurial and “turnaround” experience in the auto component industry, I am well-versed in both OEM and aftermarket industries. His main areas of interest as a BOSCH & Timken alumnus are “technology” and “people development.” He graduated from NIT Calicut as the top student in his class and with the highest university rank in his engineering field.

In 2006, he joined Hella Asia Singapore to oversee its Indian Aftermarket start-up, and in 2009, he was appointed to the board of Hella’s Indian manufacturing company, “Hella India Lighting ltd.”, where he successfully turned around the Special OE Business. Giving the company a new vision, “Technology of Tomorrow for the Life of Today on Indian Roads,” he won many industry awards, including the “ACMA Award for Quality & Productivity,” “Auto Component of the Year-2015” by CV Magazine, and “Excellence in Lighting Technology” by the International Centre of Automotive Technologies. He is also a LEAN Six Sigma Green Belt holder.

During his college days, he was the Secretary of the Computer Society of India, Student Chapter at NIT Calicut, and the Convenor of a National level Symposium including IITs, NITs, and Reputed State level Engineering Colleges.

From his humble entrepreneurial beginnings in college, when India was looking to prove its IT core competency to the world, he rose to become the Youngest Professional CEO and Managing Director of a stock exchange Listed German MNC in India at the age of 33, successfully innovating the company’s entire business model to reduce alarming Road Accidents and Road Deaths through Lighting Technology.

On many platforms, he is passionate about fostering and trusting emerging talent. Setting an example of leadership, adventure, and enthusiasm awakens his own passion. Always irrational, he is an exceptional performer who believes in using larger-than-life situations to give his own life purpose.

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India in 1996, greatly influenced him to work in the area of creating wealth for development and skilling of India’s vast pool of unemployed youths. He was born in a remote town of Madhubani, Bihar in 1977, but his life’s purpose was defined by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India in 1996. Dr. Kalam’s desire to make a difference in skilling India was so strong that in 1998, while leading a business at BOSCH India, he founded a self-funded trust called “Prayaas” in Bangalore with the help of colleagues from his employer, BOSCH-Germany, with the goal of skilling and educating underprivileged youths. He built schools and organised a variety of vocational training programmes for disadvantaged youths.

Thousands of employees from several marquee IT businesses in Bangalore, such as Wipro, Lucent, and Infosys, lent their support to his purpose and vision. With the help of the ‘Small Industries Development Bank of India,’ he was the first in BOSCH to start specialised vocational courses through “Prayaas” (100 percent job placement) and later worked for the Education Task Force of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) to design auto-sector specific vocational courses for Delhi University’s initiative for employability creation.

He has grown himself to be a competent leader of any multinational organisation as the Managing Director of Hella India Lighting Ltd. since 2010. He has plenty of possibilities to network and promote his business goal by attending Auto Industry Forums and his Alma Mater, NIT Calicut and IIM Bangalore. When many doubted his ability to achieve his lofty ambitions, he proved his tough execution skills. His vision and passion were always backed up by hard labour and meticulous execution management.

He has more than 18 years of entrepreneurial and “turnaround” specialised experience in the auto component sector, as well as diverse manufacturing and marketing experience. As a BOSCH alumnus, his primary areas of interest are “technology” and “people development,” both of which are critical to any venture’s success in today’s fast-paced world. Each of his three significant turnaround achievements in his industrial life demonstrates his risk-taking skills.
