India is among the most challenging economies for the protection and enforcement of intellectual property (IP), the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) mentioned in a report as it determines to retain New Delhi on the preferred watch list.
Argentina, Chile, China, Indonesia, India, Russia and Venezuela are seven countries on the priority watch list of the special 301 reports of USTR in 2022. USTR reported India has been inconsistent in the progress of IP protection and enforcement in the past year. But India made meaningful progress in some areas of IP protection over the last year. It lost to solve long-standing challenges and form new considerations for right holders, the report mentioned.
The report pointed out that India took great steps by accessing to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Performances and Phonograms Treaty and WIPO copyright collectively known as the WIPO Internet Treaties in 2018.
