“Global provider of traceability, track-and-trace and vision systems”

Louis Roy, Founder, and President of OPTEL: Deploying Technology for Real Change

Consumer perceptions, desires, and behaviours are all affected by corporate scandals such as counterfeiting, contamination, and cheap-labor exploitation. Supply chains are at the heart of the issue. Due to a lack of visibility and openness, today’s supply chains are undeniably ineffective. Because supply chains are such an important element of every business, this capability can result in countless efficiency gains and waste reduction at every step, thus the potential for major, positive change is immense.

Louis Roy, President of OPTEL, launched his vision with the future of children in mind. In today’s world, they face significant obstacles, but Louis sees an opportunity to assist them by paving a path to sustainability that we can all travel together. He took action on this notion about 30 years ago, embarking on a mission to develop this path to sustainability and make the world a better place through innovations that truly benefit humanity. That’s how OPTEL came to be.

Louis has worked tirelessly to learn, grow, challenge, and create answers that will make the world a better, safer place for children, and he continues to do so every day. OPTEL has created and integrated breakthrough technologies to solve challenging problems for clients and society over the years. Since then, OPTEL has developed into an extraordinary 850-person cross-functional team dedicated to assisting diverse industries in achieving compliance and efficiency while also developing corporate social responsibility.

Getting off the ground

OPTEL was founded in Quebec City in 1989 as Optel Vision, and it began by developing custom manufacturing solutions for a number of customers leveraging its expertise in optics, electronics, and computing. A decade later, the business joined the pharmaceutical industry by inventing innovative inspection technologies that allowed pharmaceutical corporations and contract manufacturers to evaluate the quality of their products and packaging. Since then, the pharmaceutical market has been a significant part of OPTEL’s operations, and the company has quickly established itself as a leader in the field, particularly since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began implementing serialisation compliance regulations to help prevent the distribution of counterfeit medications.

Pharma remains a large part of OPTEL’s customer base today, but the company’s adaptable traceability solutions, combined with recent complementary acquisitions, have allowed it to diversify into other industries such as medical devices, healthcare (particularly retail and hospital pharmacies), food and beverage, natural resources, smart manufacturing, and more. OPTEL has progressed from the field to the cloud in terms of technology. The company began with vision systems, sensors, and printers, then progressed to device control and inspection systems, middleware solutions, and plant controllers, among other things, gradually increasing connection and exchanging data with national databases and other systems.

The recognized global leader in traceability systems

OPTEL is now the world’s leading multinational provider of traceability solutions, with a global market share of 23.8 percent and a diverse customer base that includes eight of the world’s top ten pharmaceutical businesses, both brand-name and generic. Although North America has been a big part of OPTEL’s recent success, its recognised solutions are used all over the world, and the company’s worldwide market and client base have been constantly rising. OPTEL serves a diverse range of customers and sectors around the world, with headquarters in Canada and additional sites in Ireland, India, the United States, and Brazil, as well as 800 people worldwide.

OPTEL is now delighted to be the first firm in Quebec City to be designated as a Certified B Corporation. This is a significant step forward in OPTEL’s aim to inspire individuals and businesses to take action that benefits people, businesses, communities, and the environment. OPTEL has recently announced that company sustainability experts, EcoVadis, have awarded it “Silver” designation, confirming OPTEL’s position as a supplier of choice that is conscious of its social and environmental impact. Obtaining this distinction exemplifies OPTEL’s leadership and commitment to corporate social responsibility, and it is perfectly linked with the company’s ideals, as OPTEL has always worked to use its technologies to solve actual, concrete issues rather than create new ones.

Services offered by OPTEL: Optimized and simplified

OPTEL creates inspection, serialisation, traceability, and engineering solutions and services for a variety of industries with the goal of addressing real-world problems and ultimately assisting in the creation of a better world. OPTEL’s goal with its traceability solutions is to make products safer and supply chains more transparent. Beyond meeting legal obligations, the ability to identify and trace products can provide a substantial competitive edge for businesses due to the actionable data it creates. This is true in every industry, including:

Pharmaceuticals — Cutting-edge compliance and efficiency technologies that enable customers to comply with serialisation rules as well as aggregation, efficiency, profitability, and long-term sustainability.

Medical Devices – Custom vision inspection and traceability solutions – Customers can benefit from turnkey, custom-based and cost-effective traceability solutions and support to inspect and serialize medical device production and packaging lines

Healthcare – Turnkey verification and decommissioning solutions for hospitals and retail pharmacies – These solutions help meet FMD requirements and ensure the safety of patients at each step of the healthcare supply chain from the manufacturing plant to the patient

Food and Beverage – End-to-end traceability – from raw materials to the end user – to track goods and gain complete visibility with blockchain technology for a transparent and intelligent supply chain

Natural resources – Geotraceability from production or extraction to the consumer – Customers can track and trace natural resources such as cocoa, coffee, cotton, palm oil, nuts, minerals etc., to enhance supply chain visibility and overall transparency

Knowing the man behind OPTEL’s success

Intelligent supply chains, according to Louis Roy, will lead to substantial economic growth that is sustainable, ethical, and ecologically benign. With this in mind, he founded and co-presides SCALE.AI, an industry-led coalition that will shape the new global supply chain platform, as part of the Government of Canada’s Innovation Supercluster Initiative. OPTEL’s technologies provide the much-needed visibility and actionable data required to maintain product safety, decrease waste, lower distribution costs, boost productivity, and preserve the environment through product tracking, data capture, and networking. The potential for major effect is considerable because supply chains affect every organisation. Louis Roy wants OPTEL to be a positive-impact corporation through all of these initiatives since the corporate world and children both need more positive role models.
