Two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots were killed when their two-seater MiG-21 trainer crashed during a training sortie near Barmer in Rajasthan on Thursday night. The aircraft was on a sortie from Uttarlai Air Base. The accident happened around 9:10 p.m.
The development was confirmed by the IAF. “A plane crashed near Barmer around 9:10 pm. Both pilots sustained fatal injuries. The IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved families,” it said.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of two Air Warriors in an IAF MiG-21 trainer accident near Barmer, Rajasthan. Their service to the nation will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families at this hour of grief,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said after the fatal accident. The minister also spoke to Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary after the crash.
The IAF ordered a court of inquiry to find out the cause of the accident.
